Furniture

A collection of furniture including solid mahogany, fruitwood, wicker and painted designs reflecting original pieces from the past 600 years. Originally created as robust utilitarian forms, tables, stools, settles and chests developed from the medieval period to more elaborately decorated and more comfortable pieces. By the 18th century a greater variety of woods were employed by carpenters with intricate inlays and highly polished finishes. Styles such as Rococo, Neo classical and Chinoiserie were reflected in the designs of chairs, desks and tables. During the 19th century greater prosperity, expansion in overseas trade and improvements in manufacturing led to an array of styles being adopted in Victorian interiors, with Indian, Chinese, Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts influenced furniture jostling for space. The 1920s saw the clean, bold lines of Art Deco being brought into homes, blonde woods contrasting with ebony or the new materials of the decade.
