Description
Hand-enamelled floral candle snuffer recalling a mid-nineteenth-century Meissen porcelain original, its long handle blooming into a delicate lily. Meissen, established near Dresden in 1710, was the first European manufactory to successfully produce true hard-paste porcelain, ending centuries of European dependence on imported Chinese wares, and its finely modelled floral pieces, candle snuffers among them, became prized decorative objects in wealthy households across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A graceful way to extinguish a candle without smoke or fuss, this piece is a charming object in its own right. Lovely for anyone who appreciates fine porcelain history and elegant everyday objects.
