Goat Netsuke

Hand-carved boxwood drawing upon the tradition of finely carved Japanese netsuke, the miniature toggles used from the 17th century onward to secure small containers to the sash of a kimono, which evolved into a celebrated form of sculpture. The twelve animals of the East Asian zodiac provided netsuke carvers with some of their most frequently revisited subjects, combining the pleasures of animal sculpture with a layer of astrological and personal significance that made them particularly valued as gifts. The Goat, eighth in the cycle and the Eastern zodiac animal for 2027, is associated in Chinese and Japanese tradition with gentleness, creativity, perseverance and a quiet inner strength.
