The great 19th-century tradition of fossil collecting, advanced by remarkable figures such as Mary Anning, whose discoveries on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset from childhood onwards overturned established ideas about the history of life on Earth, demonstrated that the patient, systematic study of fossils could reveal a record of life stretching back hundreds of millions of years before human existence. The curated collection includes real fossils representing a range of once-living organisms. A wonderful gift for any lover of natural history or for anyone in whom the sight of a fossil in a rock face produces, as it should, an immediate and overwhelming sense of wonder.
