Asian Egret Bronze

Hand-cast bronze sculpture echoing East Asian bird studies of the late 19th to early 20th century, particularly Japanese Meiji-period sculptures where herons and egrets were favoured subjects. During the Meiji period (1868-1912), Japanese metalworkers redirected skills once used for the samurai class towards decorative bronzes for the home and international exhibitions. Their bird sculptures captured the poised stillness and alertness of the heron with extraordinary precision. In East Asian tradition the heron suggests patience, self-reliance and wisdom, giving this elegant bronze a depth of meaning as well as decorative beauty.
