Art Deco Marble Dove

Petite hand-carved marble sculpture reflecting the simplified, symbolic treatment of birds seen in French Art Deco sculpture of the 1920s by artists such as Henri Bargas (1878-1946). The Art Deco sculptors of inter-war Paris brought to animal subjects a quality of formal abstraction inspired simultaneously by ancient Egyptian carving, the simplified volumes of Cubist sculpture and the elegant restraint of Japanese netsuke, reducing feathers, wings and beaks to their essential geometry while retaining a quality of arrested life that gives the best of these small sculptures an expressive power entirely disproportionate to their scale. Marble, with its cool weight, fine grain and capacity for a polish of mirror-like perfection, was the natural material for this language of refined simplicity.
