White cotton T-shirt printed with 'don't talk about yourself: it will be done when you leave', a dry quip by Wilson Mizner (1876–1933), the American wit, bon vivant, playwright, gambler and all-purpose scoundrel. Mizner tried his hand at everything from the Klondike gold rush to Broadway playwriting and Florida real estate speculation with his brother Addison, rarely succeeding at any one venture for long, yet his razor-sharp one-liners outlived every business he attempted. Remembered less for conventional achievement than for embodying the flamboyance and cynicism of early twentieth-century American high society, his sayings were collected and celebrated long after his death.
