Ashmolean Museum
A wall calendar exploring the elegant customs and seasonal pastimes of Meiji-era beauties in art by acclaimed Japanese print maker Ogata Gekko (1859-1920). Drawing on delicately coloured prints and seasonal views, now in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, the twelve images reproduce scenes from Gekko’s series of woodblock prints ‘Manners and Customs for Women’, published c.1891. From the Japanese genre of ‘bijin-ga’, meaning ‘beautiful women’, the images include ‘Writing poem cards’, ‘Flower arranging’, ‘Iris gardens at Horikiri’, ‘Painting Studio’, and ‘Snow viewed from a quiet house’. The elegant images mix flowers, music, festivals and customs across the twelve months of the year.
