Royal Horticultural Society
A handsome desk diary Illustrated weekly with exquisite studies of medicinal plants by pioneering botanical artist Elizabeth Blackwell (1699-1758). Drawn from Blackwell’s landmark publication, ‘A Curious Herbal’, 1737-39, the work came to include 500 botanical illustrations, took three years to complete and was celebrated in its time as an authoritative work of medical botany – it was also the first commercial herbal to be produced by a British woman. Reproducing colourful plates from the edition which is now a treasure of the Society’s Lindley Library collection, richly coloured and meticulous illustrations include hollyhocks, waterlilies, ferns, lavender, and sloes; as well as exotic specimens of American Sarsaparilla, Jamaica pepper, and Malabar or Java Cinnamon. Each illustration includes the original captions with 18th century spellings. Presented on uncoated matte paper and with a tactile art paper binding, colourful illustrations capture the spectacular forms of a vast variety of medicinal flowers, fruit and foliage. A perfect companion to organise the year of any lover of flowers and botanical history.
