Description
The British Library
An absorbing jigsaw puzzle to create a colourful and intricate world map from the Library’s cartographic collection. Reproducing ‘Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis’, meaning ‘Four Hemisphere World Map’, the map was originally printed as a wall map: at the cutting-edge of the 17th century map-maker’s art and also charting the known world, c.1668. Published c.1668 by the acclaimed Dutch cartographer Frederick de Wit (c.1629-c.1706), de Wit went on to create landmark world atlases and, in 1675, a nautical atlas. Born in Gouda, de Wit’s Amsterdam printing office and shop chimed with the scientific developments of the Dutch Golden Age and the Age of Exploration, as explorers and sailors mapped trade routes, countries and continents. Full of exquisite details, the jigsaw puzzle includes an image guide and a space-saving, compact box for storage.
