Description
‘There are no words with which I can do justice to the aircrews who fought under my command. There is no parallel in wartime to such courage and determination in the face of danger…’, Air Marshal Sir Arthur 'Bomber' Harris, RAF (1892-1984)
An engineering challenge and salute to the Avro Lancaster - affectionately known as 'the Lanc' - with a kit to build your own c.45cm wingspan model of the iconic four-engine heavy bomber. Designed by Roy Chadwick (1893-1947) and, notably, large enough to carry the ‘bouncing bombs’ of Sir Barnes Wallis (1887-1979) on the ‘Dam Busters’ raid by 617 Squadron in 1943, the aircraft was flown by courageous air crews to devastating effect during the Second World War as daring, nighttime precision-bombing attacked Axis-occupied territory. Created in stainless steel with some plastic and rubber parts, the kit recalls the original ‘Mechanics Made Easy’ system (later becoming ‘Meccano’) patented by Frank Hornby in 1901. Supplied with a small screwdriver, spanner and insignia stickers, budding aeronautical engineers will savour the construction and marvel at one of the behemoths of Bomber Command, while remembering the sacrifice of the crews who fought for the skies.
