Description
My mind has been, since leaving England, a perfect hurricane of delight and astonishment', Charles Darwin (1809-82), recorded in ‘Journal and Remarks’, 1839>br>A jigsaw puzzle infused with a spirit of adventure and the wonders of the natural world: piece together the course and sights of the legendary five-year voyage of H.M.S. Beagle, 1831-36, upon which naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-92) studied the extraordinary rocks, fossils, animals and plants which went on to inform his theory of evolution. A contemporary collage-design by Brighton-based artist Maria Rivans, maps the ship’s voyage and is inspired the journal Darwin kept, later published as ‘Journal and Remarks’, 1839. Follow the voyage from Plymouth, around Cape Horn, the Galápagos, Tahiti, Australia, the Cape of Good Hope, and more on its epic scientific mission. Surrounding the map, period-illustrations include bonfires at Tierra del Fuego; the Osorno Volcano in Chile; a Galápagos tortoise; Darwin's Botafogo Bay cottage; and banana palms on the Cape Verde islands. The imagery includes illustrations by Darwin himself and those of the Beagle’s artist Augustus Earle (1793-1838). A pleasure to pore over, the intricate design is accompanied by a large image guide and booklet explaining the origin of the design. Handsomely boxed and in plastic-free packaging, the design will enthral naturalists and adventurers for hours.
