Celestial Atlas Jigsaw

A richly detailed jigsaw puzzle reproducing a scenographic celestial chart by German-born cartographer Andreas Cellarius (c.1596-1665) capturing the constellations of the Northern Hemisphere and, below them, the land and water of Earth. Published in 1660 as one of 29 hand-coloured double-folio maps in ‘Harmonia Macrocosmica’ by leading Dutch publisher Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664), the chart represented the, then, cutting-edge science and equipment of the day in two vignettes, where telescopes and early sextants suggest the importance of the Heavens for ocean navigation. Made from thick puzzle board with a matt-finish, the tactile puzzle pieces are ribbon cut for a snug fit.
