Description
A timely and poignant history mixing travelogue and illuminating background to highlight the stories of the individuals, conflicts and artists behind 100 monuments. Commemorating nearly 2,000 years of conflict across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and British-site monuments to foreign theatres of operation. Arranged chronologically, the monuments span a statue Boadicea, erected in 1902 but commemorating the Queen of the Iceni’s revolt in c.60-61; through to the Camp Bastion memorial wall created in 2015 at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Mixing veteran testimony with insight from historical experts, the book explores what war, peace, mourning and commemorations means in British history. Encompassing memorials to Viking raids; Norman and medieval battles; the Civil War; Nelson and Wellington and the Napoleonic Wars; the Crimean and Boer Wars; the First and Second World Wars; through to The Troubles, Falklands and Afghanistan. With 40 black-and-white line drawings by contemporary British artist Martin Hargreaves.
