Description
Porcelain hawthorn mug showcasing floral details from the exquisitely observed illustrations of Edith Holden (1871-1920), the Birmingham-trained artist and art teacher who spent 1906 recording the English countryside in words and watercolour. Her journal combined the skills of a professional botanical illustrator with the sensibility of a woman deeply attuned to the rhythms of the natural world, giving her paintings of hawthorn blossom, wild violets, red admirals and orange-tip butterflies a quality of personal delight that no published natural history quite matches. When her journal was finally published in 1977 as The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, it became a phenomenon, touching something deep in readers across the world. Wrapping around the mug, the design mixes blossoming hawthorn with bumblebees and butterflies in her characteristically delicate palette. Individually boxed in plastic-free packaging. Lovely for any admirer of Edith Holden or for anyone who finds the hedgerows and garden borders of the British countryside inexhaustibly beautiful.
