Venetian Murano Earrings

Blue Murano glass drop earrings with gold-tone fittings and decorative spacers, during the Renaissance, Murano glassmakers looked back to Roman examples to revive intricate techniques, creating highly prized ornaments and beads. The island of Murano, to which the Venetian Republic relocated its glassmakers in 1291, became the centre of the world's most technically ambitious glassmaking for over three centuries, its craftsmen producing millefiori, lattimo and aventurine glass of a refinement that no other European workshop could match. The tradition of Murano glass beads and ornaments, developed from ancient Roman mosaic glass techniques, made Venice the pre-eminent supplier of decorative beads to the world from the medieval period onwards, a legacy of colour and craft that these earrings continue.
