Venetian Murano Bracelet

During the Renaissance, Murano glassmakers looked back to Roman examples to revive intricate techniques, creating highly prized ornaments and beads. The island of Murano, to which the Venetian Republic relocated its glassmakers in 1291 partly to reduce the fire risk to the city and partly to control their jealously guarded secrets, became the centre of the world's most technically ambitious glassmaking for over three centuries, its craftsmen producing millefiori, lattimo and aventurine glass of a refinement that no other European workshop could match. The extraordinary range of colour achievable in Murano glass, from the deepest cobalt and ruby to the most delicate rose and amber, gave glass beads a decorative richness that rivalled gemstones, and the bracelet tradition that grew from this heritage carries with it centuries of Venetian craft and chromatic exuberance.
