Victorian Perfume Bottle

Ornate faceted glass perfume bottle decorated with metalwork, crystal and enamel detailing, recalling Victorian enamelled hair ornaments held at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Victorian jewellers brought to enamel a range of techniques developed across European and Islamic craft traditions over many centuries, investing them with a new symbolic weight in the context of the Victorian passion for the language of flowers and the meaningful deployment of natural motifs. Ivy, with its clinging habit and evergreen persistence, was universally understood to represent fidelity and enduring attachment, while oak carried the ancient meanings of strength. Beautiful displayed on a dressing table, whether in use or simply as a decoration.
