Poppy Crystal Vase

Floral etched crystal vase, hand-blown and decorated with intricate poppy detailing that recalls the great age of nineteenth-century botanical illustration, when artists such as Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) elevated flower painting to a scientific and decorative art form in its own right. The poppy itself carried rich symbolic weight in the period, associated in the Victorian language of flowers with sleep, remembrance and fleeting beauty, a meaning later given added resonance by its association with the fields of Flanders after the First World War.
