Osterley Mango Occasional Table

Solid mango wood table reflecting the 19th-century fashion for Indienne interiors, when European taste drew inspiration from Indian decorative arts, carved woodwork, printed cottons and painted ornament. The style formed part of the broader Victorian fascination with South Asian craftsmanship, admired at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and influential for design reformers such as Owen Jones and Christopher Dresser. The turned legs recall the Anglo-Indian taste for controlled ornament and lathe-worked geometry. Finished in a rich dark stain, it makes a handsome and useful accent table.
