Hand-crafted patchwork cotton quilt with a large-scale stylised floral on the reverse, echoing the Indian textile patterns whose influence on British domestic design was transformative and continuous, from the chintz and calico imported by the East India Company from the 17th century onwards, which caused such alarm to domestic manufacturers that Parliament twice attempted to ban them, to the Kashmir shawls and printed cottons that became essential accessories of Victorian dress and furnishing. The patchwork tradition itself was sustained in part by the beauty of Indian-printed cottons, whose complex repeating florals transformed the thrifty reuse of fabric into an art of colour and pattern composition.
