Chinoiserie Birds Cushion Gold

Printed velvet cushion in gold-tone inspired by 18th-century chinoiserie wallpaper designs. Chinoiserie, the European interpretation of Chinese and East Asian artistic motifs, was one of the defining decorative fashions of the 18th century, fuelled by the growth of trade with China through the East India Companies and a widespread romantic fascination with a culture that remained largely inaccessible to European travellers. Designers such as Jean Pillement translated pagodas, exotic birds, willow trees and lattice-work into an exuberant fantasy style that adorned the grandest rooms in Europe, from the Royal Pavilion at Brighton to the palaces of Versailles, and which retains its glamorous appeal to this day.
