Castello Lemon Candlestick

Gold-tone lemon candlestick drawing on Italian Renaissance grotesque ornament, its lemon-cluster base inspired by sixteenth-century bronzes and the lush naturalistic fresco work associated with Giovanni da Udine (1487–1561), Raphael's gifted collaborator on the decoration of the Vatican Loggia. Da Udine had studied the recently rediscovered ancient Roman interiors of the Domus Aurea, adapting their fantastical grotesque motifs, garlands of fruit, foliage and mythical creatures, into a decorative language that swept through Renaissance Italy and influenced generations of designers who followed.
