Botticelli Primavera Tapestry

Elegant woven tapestry based on 'Primavera' by Florentine artist Sandro Botticelli (c.1445–1510), painted c.1482 and now held in the Uffizi Gallery. One of the most discussed and debated paintings in the Western canon, 'Primavera' depicts nine mythological figures in an allegory of spring that draws on classical poetry, particularly Ovid and Lucretius, to celebrate fertility, beauty and the renewal of the natural world under the protection of Venus, who stands at the centre. Painted almost certainly for the Medici family, whose symbol the orange tree frames and shelters the scene, it represents the Florentine Renaissance ideal of synthesising classical learning with Christian humanism in an image of almost overwhelming decorative and intellectual richness. Made in a cotton and polyester mix in multicoloured hues, and a cotton backing with integral sleeve for hanging.
