Blue Edo Candle Duo

Duo of printed glass votives with decoration recalling Japanese woodblock prints of the late Edo period, with a wave motif echoing the stylised seascapes of Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), supplied in a keepsake box. Hokusai's engagement with the sea extended far beyond the single image by which he is universally known, his 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' contains numerous coastal scenes in which the patterned, almost textile-like treatment of waves reflects both his extraordinary command of the woodblock medium and his deep absorption in the tradition of decorative water representation throughout Japanese and Chinese art.
