Arras Stork Footstool

Woven tapestry footstool recalling the richly patterned jacquard silks and the fashion for Orientalism in 19th-century European decorative design. this cotton-rich tapestry features two arras storks amongst foliage, on pine frame with brass stud detail and gold braided trim. The invention of the Jacquard loom in 1804-05 made elaborate woven patterns available to a far broader market than the costly hand-drawn silk drawlooms of the previous century had permitted, and the Ottoman, Persian and Mughal motifs that the taste for Orientalism demanded were among the most popular subjects for this newly democratic luxury.
