Porcelain Chaffinch

Bisque porcelain bird figurine reflecting the tradition of finely modelled bird studies popular in the late 19th century. European porcelain manufactories, including Meissen, Sevres and Vienna, had produced decorative bird figures since the 18th century, combining natural history observation with sculptural elegance. The later Victorian taste for bisque, an unglazed porcelain with a soft matte surface, brought a quieter, more naturalistic quality to these figures. The result is a delicate decorative piece with the gentle presence of a small sculpture.
