Da Vinci Ornithopter Mini Kit

An ingenious kit to make an intriguing model of a flying machine based on a pen-and-ink design c.1490 by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Called an ornithopter, meaning ‘bird wing’, the machine was inspired by da Vinci’s study of the mechanics of flight and observations of the wings of birds. The machine included a platform on which the human aeronaut would lie and was powered by flapping the wings; perhaps inspired by the Greek legend of Daedalus and Icarus. True to the design – which is not known to have ever been built – the miniature model’s wings flap as you pull the string. With pre-cut MDF pieces to slot together and string to secure with knots, follow the illustrated instructions to make in 30 minutes; add a dab of glue to secure joints. Perfect for a desk, to inspire your own ingenious thoughts, or for display on a bookshelf: the model is bound to make a fun talking point.
