The tokonoma, the recessed alcove used to display a single treasured object, embodies the Japanese aesthetic conviction that the right object, given space and attention, reveals itself more fully than when crowded among others. Kumiko, the art of assembling intricate geometric lattice patterns from precisely cut and fitted pieces of wood without nails or glue, represents one of the most demanding and beautiful expressions of Japanese craft tradition.
