Set of 10 The Holly & The Ivy Christmas Cards

‘The holly and the ivy when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown’, traditional Christmas carol
Decorative, die-cut Christmas cards celebrating winter foliage, with its pagan and Christian symbolism, and the traditional British folk carol ‘The Holly and the Ivy’. Reproducing an intricate illustration of hellebores, holly, ivy and rose hips with a calligraphic text border including lyrics from the much-loved carol; the illustration by contemporary artist Janet Marker is from the archives of The Medici Society, founded 1908, which aimed to bring fine art to the public with affordable reproductions. Thought to have been sung in regional variations for generations, the melody we know today for ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ was transcribed in the Cotswolds in 1909 by folklorist Cecil Sharp (1859-1924). Cleverly die-cut to echo the curving shape of the frame, delightful cards to spread Christmas cheer this season.
