Description
Thoughtful cards reproducing a series of 1920s paintings by Margaret W. Tarrant (1888-1959) inspired by Bible verses and the lyrics of Christmas carols. Her religious art became fashionable in the 1920s and 30s for the Medici Society, for whom she produced many of her illustrations, funded a research trip to the Holy Land in 1936 to inspire her later series. From the Medici Society archive, the images include the words ‘Good tidings of great joy', from Luke 2:10-14, which inspired the 18th century-carol ‘While Shepherds Watched their flocks by night’; 'Love came down at Christmas', which refers to a poem by Christina Rossetti from 1885 and later adapted as a hymn; and ‘A little Child came to earth long ago’, recalling the words of the carol by Emily E.S. Elliott (1836-97).

These cards are so lovely reminding me of Sunday school and childhood. My Primary Church of England school had pictures but the artist and illustrated books. These cards are really what Christmas is about

These are the most striking Christmas cards that I have seen for a long time. They are beautifully designed and printed, and are both modern and 'classy'. All this, and so reasonably priced - I was so pleased that I ordered two more packs. Ivan from Shropshire
