Description
A jolly Christmas card inspired by the seasonal German tradition of making gingerbread houses, known as ‘Lebkuckenhause’, or ‘Pfefferkuchenhause’. Made since the 13th century, lebkuchen, and, later, gingerbread, became a baked treat associated with Christmas. Nuremberg was the centre of German gingerbread-making from the 17th century with Guilds of master bakers competing to produce ever more intricate forms and shapes. It is thought that gingerbread houses became popular in the early 19th century, around the time that the Brothers’ Grimm fairytale ‘Hansel and Gretel’ was first published. Now enjoyed across Europe, with seasonal specialities and local recipes, the spiced confection decorated with white icing and sweets has become a Christmas centrepiece. With die-cut details to the roofline, this delightful contemporary illustration features candy canes and icing-inspired decoration to enchant friends and family of all ages.
Made exclusively for Museum Selection.
