Once known as a ‘titmouse’, a name used for a number of small birds, the name derives from the Old English ‘titmase’ or ‘titmose’; recorded since the 14th century the name became ‘titmouse’ and then, shortened to ‘tit’, with the bird’s colourful plumage earning it its popular name today. A symbol of industriousness, hope and good fortune, blue tits are a much-loved garden bird, echoed in Walter de la Mare’s (1873-1956) poem’s reference to the bird as a ‘tiny son of life; this spright’.
