A pretty memo cube, complete with a useful drawer, decorated with a contemporary, painterly design of a blue tit perched amid pink alstroemeria, fuchsia and chrysanthemum flowers. Once known as a ‘titmouse’, which was a name used also for a number of small birds, the name derives from the Old English ‘titmase’ or ‘titmose’; recorded since the 14th century the name became ‘titmouse’ and then, shortened to ‘tit’, with the bird’s colourful plumage earning it its popular name today. A symbol of industriousness, hope and good fortune, blue tits are a much-loved garden bird, echoed in Walter de la Mare’s (1873-1956) poem’s reference to the bird as a ‘tiny son of life; this spright’.
