Pickled onions and walnuts were a staple of Victorian dining tables, often served alongside cold meats and cheeses. The tradition of pickling dates back centuries, but in the 19th century it became a hallmark of British culinary practice, reflecting both thrift and taste. Walnuts, prized for their rich flavour, were frequently paired with tangy pickles to create a balance of textures and tastes. This combination recalls the era's emphasis on seasonal preservation and the conviviality of shared meals.
