Marzipan Vegetables

Charming vegetable-shaped marzipan, recalling the often elaborate forms created from the medieval period for courtly celebrations. Marzipan, made from ground almonds and sugar, was one of the most prestigious confections of the medieval and Renaissance periods, its high cost placing it firmly within the world of royal and aristocratic feasting, where subtleties, as these sculptural sugar and almond works were known, were crafted into castles, heraldic beasts and lifelike fruits and vegetables to astonish and delight guests at banquets. The tradition of shaping marzipan into naturalistic forms was particularly beloved in Germany, Italy and Spain, and by the Tudor period these exquisite edible sculptures had become a centrepiece of festive tables across Europe, a tradition this delightful confection continues to celebrate.
