PRODUCT DETAILS
Description
Tortoise garden ornament reflecting the mid-19th-century British fashion for keeping tortoises as gentle domestic companions, a trend tied to Victorian fascination with natural history and global exploration. As scientific expeditions broadened knowledge of distant species, the public became captivated by these long-lived creatures, especially Galapagos tortoises studied during Darwin’s voyages. Their extraordinary longevity inspired moral tales and children’s books, casting the tortoise as a symbol of patience, endurance and quiet dignity. One noted specimen, Harriet, believed to have been collected by Darwin in 1835, lived to the remarkable age of 175. This ornament celebrates that era’s affection for contemplative creatures and enduring connections to the natural world.

Just got this the other day and I love her. She's outside next to my other ornaments most of which I have purchased from Museum Selection. I used to have a small tortoise ornament but someone took it so I hope Harriet stays in place.
