Silver pendant set with lapis lazuli, overlaid with a decorative motif recalling a detail from a Qing dynasty scroll. Lapis lazuli, the deep blue stone whose name derives from the Latin for stone and the Persian for sky, has been among the most prized of all gemstones since antiquity, mined in the mountains of northeastern Afghanistan and traded across the ancient world from Egypt to China. In Chinese decorative art of the Qing period (1644-1912), its vivid blue was associated with heaven, wisdom and imperial authority.
