Description
Lapis and carnelian necklace interspersed with freshwater pearls and gold-plated brass spacer beads, evoking pieces from the 12th Dynasty of the Middle Kingdom, c.1878–1840 BC. Ancient Egyptian jewellery of the Middle Kingdom period represents one of the supreme achievements of decorative art, goldsmith-craftsmen working for the royal court produced collar necklaces, pectorals and bracelets of astonishing technical perfection, in which lapis lazuli imported from Afghanistan and carnelian from the Eastern Desert were combined with gold and faience in designs of cosmic significance. Blue lapis represented the heavens, the Nile flood and divine fertility, while red carnelian evoked the life-giving power of blood and the sun, together they embodied a vision of the universe held in harmonious balance, making jewellery not merely ornamental but a form of sacred protection worn by the living and the dead alike. Natural stones may vary. A beautiful gift choice.
