From the collection of the British Museum, this card reproduces a Japanese Rinpa School painting depicting egrets; a luminous detail from a six-panel folding screen by an unknown 18th-century artist. This card shows a trio of egrets in the snow with a shining gold background. Egrets are small white herons known for the attractive white plumes on their crest back and chest. Traditionally a symbol of good fortune, purity and longevity, egrets are also associated with winter as this is when they make the long trip to the British coast.
