10 Sakura Birds Cards

Greetings cards which reproduce a Japanese-inspired design by celebrated French ceramicist and glassmaker Amédée de Caranza (1840-1912) for the firm Vieillard & Cie, Bordeaux c.1875-85. Now in the collection of the Smithsonian, the design mixes birds-of-paradise, stylised cherry blossom, known as ‘sakura’ in Japan, and a striking watery, marbled background in the style of the Japanese suminagashi technique, meaning ‘floating ink’. Glistening gold foil highlights the flowers, feathers and branches of this fantastical design adding a sumptuous effect.
