Description
A handsome collection of cards reproducing wallpaper designs by the great Arts and Crafts designer William Morris (1834-1896). Inspired by his own close study of the forms of plants and flowers, many observed in his own garden, Morris created intricate wallpapers which were rich in naturalistic detail but carefully balanced to achieve a pleasing rhythm. Includes details from ‘Trellis’, Morris’s earliest wallpaper design from c.1862 and thought to have been inspired by his rose garden at Red House, Bexleyheath; plus ‘Fruit’ from 1865, ‘Marigold’ from c.1875, ‘Wild Tulip’ from c.1884, 'Willow Bough', 1887, and ‘Pink and Rose’ from c.1890. Reproduced from papers held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
