Description
Evocative Christmas cards, reproducing ‘ice scenes’ by Dutch master Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634) and his nephew, Barend (or Barent) Avercamp (1612-79); all now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Hendrick Avercamp was one of the earliest proponents of this new, bustling subject matter. The scenes of frozen canals and rivers record the climatic phenomenon known as the Little Ice Age as well as curious social details as Dutch society took to the ice. Includes Hendrick Avercamp’s paintings ‘Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters’, c.1608; ‘Ice Skating in a Village’, c.1610; ‘Enjoying the Ice’, c.1615-20; and Barend Avercamp’s ‘Enjoying the Ice’ c.1630-70s.
