Description
Affecting Christmas cards reproducing a poignant detail of Mary cradling baby Jesus, from an illustration by Jon O. Brubaker (American, 1875–1953). The original design featured on the cover of 'The Country Home' magazine, December 1932. The dramatic black background and focus upon the light beaming from the infant Christ, and which bathes Mary’s face, is a 20th century interpretation of the aesthetic of tenebrism; such dramatic contrasts of light and dark has been used by artists such El Greco and Caravaggio and was especially popular in Baroque painting.
