Description
Tate
A fine new bone china-mug with which to enjoy a beverage in the company of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851)’s mesmeric watercolour, ‘The Scarlet Sunset’, c.1830-40, now in the collection of the Tate. Wrapping around the body of the mug, the artwork’s luminous colours and hazy view of a waterway, bridge and distant townscape make a soothing scene. Much debated, the scene is thought to depict a French town and is often compared with Monet’s (1899-40) painting of 1872, ‘Impression, Sunrise’. With a generous capacity and fine profile, the colourful image contrasts with a plain white mug interior. Finished with a complementary band of mustard yellow decorating the handle and presented in a co-ordinating gift box, the effect of sunlight on water will lift your mood with every sip.
