Description
Introduced in 1816, and reflecting early nineteenth-century fascination with the Italian landscape, combining classical motifs with the deep cobalt-blue transfer printing that became a hallmark of Spode manufacture. The blue-and-white palette was itself a legacy of the craze for Chinese porcelain that had swept Europe since the 17th century, and Spode's master potters perfected the underglaze transfer-printing technique around 1784, making fine decorative ceramics available to a broad middle-class market for the first time. The Italian pattern, with its romantic lakeside villas, arched bridges and ancient ruins, encapsulates the Regency-era ideal of the Grand Tour, bringing the imagined pleasures of classical Italy into the English dining room. Oval porcelain scalloped-edge dish traditionally used for serving accompaniments, desserts, or side dishes.
