Set of four china mugs decorated with fine floral designs based on textile patterns by William Kilburn (1745–1818), reflecting the crisp botanical style associated with late 18th-century English printed cottons, examples of which are held by institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum. Kilburn was among the most gifted and versatile botanical draughtsmen of his age. The late 18th century saw English printed cotton design reach a peak of refinement, as engraved copper-plate and roller printing allowed a fineness of line and complexity of botanical detail impossible in the earlier block-printed tradition, and Kilburn's designs represent this tradition at its most accomplished.
