Marrel was active during the height of Dutch tulip mania in the 1630s, when the flower's rare, flame-like petal patterns, prized above all others, commanded extraordinary prices and inspired a wealth of detailed botanical and decorative painting, his own jewel-bright tulip studies a fine example of the genre's precision and colour.
