Gold-plated sterling silver pendant set with garnets and freshwater pearls, recalling the jewelled collar worn by Maria Portinari (b.1456) in Hans Memling's portrait of c.1470. Memling, one of the great painters of the Northern Renaissance, brought extraordinary precision to the depiction of fabric, jewels and devotional detail, and the Portinari portraits remain among the most refined images of 15th-century Flemish courtly elegance.
