Hand-carved boxwood netsuke depicting a tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog). Netsukes were traditionally used as closures for Japanese garments like kimonos in the 17th century. Over time these miniature sculptures have evolved into collectables that can be displayed on your shelves or stands. The legendary tanuki is well-known for their mischievous personality — a master of disguise and shapeshifting, but somewhat gullible and absentminded.
